About fourth to fifty minutes into the hike, the creek fades into forest,
and the trail is a little more demanding as the angle steepens. The path
is clear and there is little distraction as you wind your way further
up the valley thruough mossy spruce forest. A steep avalanche slope is
crossed five minutes before the pass is reached.
Barely rising above the trees, the pass offers only marginally interesting
views, it pays to follow up the open ridge to the south, a 30 vertical-meter
climb to a cairn marking the trail's high point. This is a far superior
viewpoint for Mt. Baldy and the surrounding mountains to the west.
