Bourgeau Lake and Harvey Pass trail is one of the best day trips near
the town of Banff. Despite an elevation gain of 1037 meters to the pass,
it is still reachable for most hikers. The lake is an attractive body
of water that lies in a small sub-alpine meadow. The scenery that justifies
the effort is in the huge alpine amphitheatre that lies above and to the
west of the lake.
The trail to Bourgeau Lake is straightforward. After the lake, the Harvey
Pass trail begins a steep and strenuous ascent up the Bourgeau Lake inlet
stream. A small lake at the top of the headwall marks the entry into a
magnificent tarn-studded meadow. From this point, there are plenty of
options for off-trail rambling, but the trail heads to the left and makes
a short climb to another lake that lies just right before the summit of
Harvey Pass. From the pass, the view offers a towering pyramid of Mount
Assiniboine, Healy Creek and Sunshine Meadows, plus many other mountain
ranges in the background.
